What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that distinguishes itself through its focus on ground techniques and submissions, utilizing levers and strategies to control the opponent. Unlike some martial arts, BJJ relies not on physical strength but on the efficient application of techniques, enabling even lighter practitioners to defend themselves against stronger opponents.

For those interested in starting BJJ, its main benefits include improving:

  • Self-defense;

  • Flexibility;

  • Balance;

  • Endurance;

  • Concentration;

  • Agility.

Fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, fundamentals play a crucial role in skill development. Let's explore some fundamental aspects that form the basis of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

1. Positioning and Control

In BJJ, positioning is fundamental. The foundation begins with control positions such as mount and back control. These positions offer strategic advantages and are essential for advancing in techniques.

Mount: A dominant position where you find yourself on the opponent's chest. Mastering the mount is essential for controlling the fight and creating opportunities for submissions.

Back Control: Controlling the opponent's back is a strategic position that offers various attack options. Seeking control of the back is a fundamental part of the BJJ game.

Guard: When on the ground, being in the guard means being in a defensive position. Mastering the guard is crucial both to avoid being controlled by the opponent and to initiate attacks from that position.

2. Submissions

The technique of submissions in BJJ allows for strangles and joint locks, enabling you to neutralize your opponent effectively. Mastering submissions requires constant practice and refined technique.

Strangles: There are different types of strangles, such as the front strangle (rear-naked choke) and the strangle from the back. These techniques aim to control the opponent's neck, forcing them to submit.

Joint Locks: Techniques that manipulate joints, such as the armlock (armbar) and leglock. These are powerful tools for neutralizing the opponent.

3. Transitions and Movement

BJJ is dynamic, and the ability to transition between positions is crucial. We teach our students how to move efficiently on the mat, preparing them to secure an advantageous position over their opponent during a fight.

Important note: In our martial arts academy, we prioritize the health, well-being, and safety of our students and do not condone any form of aggression outside of training and competitions.

Basic Vocabulary

Understanding the vocabulary of BJJ is essential for effective communication on the mat. Here are some basic words and expressions:

1. Tatami: The training surface where practitioners perform their activities. Made of impact-absorbing materials, the tatami provides a safe environment for practicing falls and ground techniques.

2. Kimono (Gi): The distinctive uniform worn in BJJ, consisting of a jacket, pants, and belt. The kimono is essential not only to respect tradition but also to provide strategic grips and control points during the fight.

3. Controlled Sparring: Refers to dynamic training, where practitioners apply learned techniques more realistically but in a controlled manner. This practice allows the application of skills in a context close to a real fight, significantly contributing to the student's development.

4. Guard: A fundamental position in BJJ when a practitioner is on the ground. There are various forms of guard, each with its specific strategies. Mastering the guard is essential both to avoid being controlled by the opponent and to launch attacks from that position.

5. Guard Passing: A technique in which the practitioner seeks to overcome the opponent's legs to advance to a more dominant position. This skill is vital for progressing in BJJ, allowing the transition from a defensive position to a more strategic one.

6. Belts and Rank Hierarchy: Belts indicate a practitioner's skill level, and the color hierarchy follows a specific pattern. Starting with the white belt for beginners, the progression typically includes the colors: white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Within these colors, there are intermediate belts indicating different levels of knowledge and skill.

  • White: Beginner;

  • Blue: Advanced Beginner;

  • Purple: Intermediate;

  • Brown: Advanced

  • Black: Master
